As warmer weather returns to Wrightstown and surrounding communities, more residents are taking advantage of local trails and rural roads with ATVs and UTVs. With that increase in activity comes a higher risk of injury, making this a good time to focus on safe riding practices.
ATV and UTV accidents are among the more common causes of serious trauma in rural Wisconsin. Many incidents involve rollovers, collisions, or ejections, often resulting in head injuries, broken bones, or other life-threatening conditions. In more severe cases, patients may require rapid transport to higher-level trauma centers, sometimes by air, to receive the care they need.
The good news is that many of these injuries are preventable.
Key Safety Tips:
Wear a Helmet Every Ride
Helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injury. Even short trips or rides on familiar property can be dangerous without proper protection.
Ride Sober
Alcohol and recreational vehicles are a dangerous combination. Impaired judgment and slower reaction times greatly increase the risk of a crash.
Know Your Machine
ATVs and UTVs handle differently than cars or trucks. Take time to understand how your vehicle turns, brakes, and responds on different terrain.
Stay Within Your Limits
Excessive speed and uneven terrain are common causes of rollovers. Ride at a safe speed and avoid unnecessary risks.
Supervise Young Riders
Children should only operate age-appropriate vehicles and always be supervised. Adult-sized machines are not designed for younger riders.
Accidents can happen in an instant, especially in rural areas where distance, terrain, and access can impact how quickly patients reach definitive care. When emergencies do occur, local EMS, fire departments, and regional critical care resources work together to ensure patients receive timely, appropriate care based on the severity of their injuries. Wrightstown's trails/roads are meant to be enjoyed. By riding smart, staying alert, and following a few simple safety precautions, you can help ensure every ride ends safely.
